Types of Septic Systems

The Plumbing Experts are known for concrete septic tank installations, repair and pumping, however, there are many types of septic designs that exist! Due to the soil surrounding the Anderson, Greenville and upstate region, as well as regulations around certain septic designs for residential neighborhoods and commercial areas, we’ve decided to specialize in concrete design and installation. Learn more about the common types of septic systems offered and why a concrete tank could suit your property!

Conventional Gravity System

This is the most basic type of septic system. It consists of a septic tank that holds wastewater and allows solids to settle at the bottom and liquids to float to the top. The treated liquid wastewater then flows by gravity into the drain field, where it's further treated by soil filtration. Additionally, this septic design tends to be the cheapest to purchase.

Pressure Distribution System

This type of system includes a pump that helps distribute the treated wastewater from the septic tank into the drain field. The pump ensures even distribution of waste throughout the drain field, which can be beneficial for areas with less favorable soil conditions.

Mound System

Mound systems are used when the soil's absorbency is inadequate to treat wastewater. The sewage is pumped to the mound, which provides additional treatment as the wastewater moves through the sand or gravel and into the underlying soil. Mound systems look like a mound in the back or front yard with the help of heavy excavation!

Aerobic Treatment

Perhaps one of the newest designs, these units introduce oxygen into the treatment process, enhancing the breakdown of organic matter by aerobic bacteria.

Drip Distribution System

Drip systems use a network of pipes with small holes to distribute waste evenly across the drain field. These systems do well in areas with a small amount of space or heavy soil.

In addition to the septic designs above, other types of designs include anaerobic treatment, septic chambers, constructed wetlands, evapotranspiration, and recirculating sand filters. Of all of the design systems, aerobic treatment usually costs the most, whereas gravity systems cost the least.
